Test method for Newtonian Optical Flats

Optical flats are tested against a reference flat. This will work out their accuracy in wavelengths of light by the interference fringes shown. Flats mounted on holders can commonly be distorted by poor glueing methods. This test will prove the quality of the mounting system, before the flat needs to be dismounted and tested separately. Flats will also be tested by auto-collimation against a spherical mirror to determine image quality and detect astigmatism.
