The Dark Side Of Component Hardware
04-05-2017
Sugatsune has grown its reputation amongst designers with fittings in bright metal and stainless steel. These practical finishes fit in with the modern stripped down aesthetic and have a functional beauty all of their own. Bright, happy hardware. Until now.
It started with one or two sinister requests for black hinges which were met with products like the HES3D-120, a fine architectural hinge with three axis adjustment and a seven link mechanism. But the thirst for the darker side was unquenchable and soon Sugatsune found that it was caught in a frenzy of blackness; hooks, hinges, locks, even drawer slides, all in the colour of the night.
The HES3D-120 is part of a range of articulated hinges for doors as heavy as 100kgs or just 23mm thin. All are fully adjustable on three axes and all can also be had in black.
The situation now is that many Sugatsune products are available in black, either off the shelf or by special order. And the range is growing all the time, spreading like a virus through the Sugatsune catalogue.
One advantage to the designer of course, is that a complete range of components can be had in black - even difficult to source items like locks. So a coherent look can be carried throughout the project.
Retail and hospitality spaces often follow a Stygian theme, dark and gothic or warm and cosy where shiny bright objects would not be in keeping. Black is the colour note to set the scene.
