Find The Needle Add My Company
Is space the final frontier for interior architects?
These days space is at a premium with designers being expected to squeeze more and more into ever smaller spaces. Doors take up space, a swing door needs a minimum of a quarter circle with a radius at least as much as the width of the door. Wouldn't it be good if you could have all the benefits of large doors but in a space saving format? You may answer that is what sliding doors do but they need a track to one or other side again as wide as the door itself and they don't give you a flush surface when closed. Also sliding doors don't have much pizazz. Pizazz is pretty much what the LIN-X1000 is made from. A bit of steel and hitech materials too of course. It has a most eye catching motion that is quite unique. You pull the door to open it and it slides smoothly out and then to the side leaving the entrance completely unobstructed. The motion uses springs and hydraulic dampers for a sophisticated piece of motion control, a bit of a speciality of Sugatsune's. Because of the unique motion it needs less than half the space required by a swing door literally opening up new possibilities for the use of space in a contemporary interior. The hardware is very simple, it is attached to the inside of the door frame and then to the back of the door, no hinges are required and the two arms are linked by a connecting bar. Unlike competitors products installation is quick and simple, there is no sub arm to install, just the two arms. In use it feels firm and authoritative, no wobbles or clatters, just the hushed motion of high quality engineering. Once installed the door can be adjusted horizontally and vertically by up to 7mm and also for depth up to 5mm and 3mm for yaw. If using a handle it can be placed anywhere towards the centre of the door, just not at the edges. The LIN-X100 is a system for doors as large as 1.98m x 1100mm wide but it comes from a broader family of lateral opening flush doors designed for all applications right down to kitchen cabinets, with the FAD-5 doors as narrow as 270mm.
