They were named after the former British Prime Minister David Lloyd George who introduced a card in 1911 to keep a record of medical information for those paying National Health Insurance, which followed the National Insurance Act 1911. The use of record cards grew between 1911 and 1948 at the formation point of the NHS; the Lloyd George envelopes were first introduced during the First World War with their size based on the readily available ammunition boxes at the time. Lloyd George envelopes were allocated to each individual in the UK at birth when registering with a GP, the record then followed them to the patients new GP whenever they moved practice or location therefore containing a persons entire medical history. The Lloyd George envelopes are beige coloured with red markings for males and blue marking for females.
