NIBE Thermal Store Cylinders
Thermal store cylinders are used as a store of energy for the hot water and central heating system. The tank-in-tank design thermal store consists of an unvented hot water cylinder sealed inside another larger cylinder. The larger cylinder being the central heating system fluid and the hot water cylinder holding the hot water for use in your home. The picture right shows a NIBE tank-in-tank VPA thermal store cylinder. Thermal stores allow multiple heat sources to contribute to the entire heating system. If we are looking at docking solar panels or a wood burning stove to our thermal store, there are different designs which incorporate a separate coil towards the bottom of the tank. This coil allows docking from such sources as wood burning stoves, solar panels and pellet stove boilers. (NIBE VPAS Thermal Store Cylinder with Solar Coil Solo Heating Installations will use thermal stores with nearly all of its renewable energy systems. These cylinders act as buffer tanks, which eliminate the cycling of an appliance (constant turning on and off). Without a thermal store cylinder in the system, when an appliance such as a ground source heat pumps starts to heat the hot water for the property, the heat pump will contribute energy to the cylinder but quickly turn itself off once that demand has been met. A thermal store allows a prolonged operation for the heat pump, which keeps the efficiency of the heat pump high and the energy bills low.
