COMPARE IP RATINGS FOR INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONIC ENCLOSURES
Specifying the right ingress protection is crucial if your industrial electronics are to survive in harsh conditions. That usually means a rating of IP 66 or higher (though a larger number does not always mean ‘better’ – merely ‘different’).
Look for diecast, GRP or plastic enclosures rated IP 66, IP 67, IP 68 or IP 69K. The first digit (6) indicates the highest rating for protection against dust ingress. The second digit (6/7/8/9) shows the level of protection against water ingress:
IP 66 – protection against temporary flooding (such as high seas). Water must not enter in any harmful quantity. The three-minute test is based on a powerful water jet: 100 litres/minute, 100 kPa at a distance of three metres.
IP 67 – protection against immersion for 30 minutes. The top must be at least 150 mm below the surface; the bottom must be submerged to a depth 1,000 mm at most.
IP 68 – protection against a pre-agreed level of immersion more challenging than IP 67.
IP 69K – protection against close-range high temperature spraying with high-pressure water jets.
