Plastic Extrusion for Valentine’s Day
Plastic Extrusion for Valentine’s Day Plastic extrusion describes the process of extruding plastics into certain 2D shapes using moulds. Whilst there are many objects that we associate with this process, there are some that don’t appear so obvious like a lot of the gifts exchanged on Valentine’s Day. To find out more about the plastic extrusion process, you can read about the process in our blog, here, or continue reading to find out which of the well-known Valentine’s gifts are extruded this way. Artificial Roses The most traditional and well-known Valentine’s gift is the red rose, but many people have turned to the idea of buying an artificial rose for a longer-lasting concept. For the most part, these artificial flowers are made of plastic and are often extruded into shape. However, it’s important not to get confused here between plastic extrusion and injection moulding – injection moulding is a similar process but is used to construct three-dimensional shapes, whereas extrusion is two-dimensional shapes. Injection moulding is often used for the plastic rose stem, but extrusion comes into play to construct the plastic petals. Chocolate and Sweet Packaging Just like many types of food packaging, plastic extrusion is very commonly used to create the packaging for various chocolates and sweets often gifted on Valentine’s Day. With chocolate and biscuit selection boxes, you’ve probably seen the plastic tray that divides each layer of the confectionery box– these layers are usually extruded to gain their custom shape. The exterior wrappers of other sweets and chocolates are also involved in the plastic extrusion process quite a lot too along with other plastic sheets and films. Photographic Film Film photography has made a reappearance in the last decade as more of a memorable gift to offer on Valentine’s Day. The film is usually primarily made from a type of thermoplastic. The extrusion process is used to cast the film which is cooled and then wound up on a roll. It often involves co-extrusion too to extrude two or sometimes more layers of different polymers into a single film. Candles A lot of bottles and jars, including those used to package candles start out as extruded products. Plastic candles are extruded in the very early stages of the manufacturing process and then go on to be blow-moulded and injected with compressed air which causes the mould to expand in shape. Our team are extremely knowledgeable in the plastic extrusion process. Give us a call, here to get a quote for extruding your plastic products.
