Water is a valuable resource that we consume daily, and plastic plays a vital role in keeping our water clean. Whether it be storage or distribution, there are a range of plastic materials throughout the whole water infrastructure system.
Plastic in Clean Water Solutions
Plastic can be used to create a wide range of appliances that play a vital role in keeping our water clean:
Pipes and Tanks – many water systems include the use of plastic pipes to help store and transport water sources. Plastic pipes and tanks are flexible, durable, resistant to corrosion, and easy to install. These can be placed underground to allow water to flow between storage and access points without decaying or the water getting contaminated. Plastic tanks have a long lifeline, so they can last for many years down the line without damage. This means they can store water whilst keeping it clean and protected.
Bottled Water – one of the biggest users of plastic. Plastic bottles are cheap, lightweight, flexible, and strong, making them the perfect material to store water. They are easy to transport and won’t get damaged, meaning the water won’t get contaminated. They are also cheap, which means they can be bought in bulk without causing a financial burden.
Water Filters – many water filter systems or devices use plastic or are made from plastic due to it being flexible, lightweight, durable, and inexpensive. They also provide safe drinking water to consumers. These plastics can be designed into any desired shape whether that be for larger filtration systems or smaller portable straws.
Recyclable – plastics used in water infrastructure can be recycled at the end of their use, which reduces waste and can contribute to a circular economy.
Plastics Used in Water Distribution Systems
The main plastic materials in the water distribution system are polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polypropylene:
Polyethylene – this type of plastic is most commonly used for pipes due to its flexibility, durability, and resistance to corrosion.
Polyvinyl – this is most commonly used in water supply and drainage systems due to its flexibility, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance.
Polypropylene – this is used in a variety of plumbing solutions as it can withstand hot or cold temperatures, is durable, and chemical resistant.
Without plastic, water supply and distribution systems would not be how we know them today and materials and systems will continue to evolve.
Here at Rayda, we create bespoke plastic products from plastic extrusion methods. If you have any general plastic enquiries, please contact our team today, and we will be happy to help!
