Most of the products we use in everyday life, at home and out of the home, are made from plastic, and when we are done with them, many of us just throw them away in the general waste. However, these plastic products can be recycled, reused or repurposed once you are finished with them.
Recycling Plastic Items
Recycling your plastic products is easy to do. Once you are finished with a plastic product, make sure it is thoroughly cleaned and placed in a designated recycling bin that is separate from non-recyclable materials, that can be set out for collection by the proper authorities. From there, your plastic waste will be taken to a recycling centre and recycled into new plastic materials.
Reusing Plastic Items
Plastic items don’t just have to be thrown into the recycling bin after being used, many plastic items can be saved and reused again and again. Old plastic containers, for example, can be kept and used for things like storage. Some plastic products, like cutlery and cups, can be rinsed and reused (when reusing plastic items like this, make sure they are numbered 2, 4, or 5).
Repurposing Plastic Items
Reusing plastic items doesn’t always have to be as simple as it sounds; you can get creative with old plastic items and repurpose them into something new. For example, old plastic bottles can be cleaned and cut into pieces to create things like jewellery, wind chimes and other decorative items and arts and crafts that you can come up with. You can also repurpose plastic into more practical things, for example, old plastic containers and bottles can be washed and turned into things like watering cans, plant pots, bird feeders, and storage.
