Bioplastics – Plastic Alternatives and Environmental Benefits

Finding a biodegradable alternative for plastic has never been more important. As research progresses, more and more ways of developing bioplastics are becoming apparent, so we’ve listed some of the up-and-coming plastic innovations below.

Using Rice to Create Bioplastic Containers

Research in Finland has led to a breakthrough in making bioplastic from rice. Starting their experiments back in 2014, researchers have used rice starch to develop a more environmentally friendly plastic that can be used for things like food packaging.

They’ve found that this particular type of bioplastic has high thermal resistance and mechanical strength, making it durable, and ideal for single-use packaging that can then be broken down in time.

Bioplastic – Constructed from Banana Peels

Winner of the “Science in Action Award” in 2013, a 16-year-old from Turkey derived the idea of making bioplastic from banana peels – a great example of recycling food waste.

The process involved converting the starch and glucose from the banana peels using very little equipment. The bioplastic showed signs of holding its structure and quality over a long period of time, so the creator hopes that in the future it can be used for electrical cables and cosmetic prosthesis.

Combining Sugar and CO2 to Make Bioplastic

Scientists at the University of Bath have found a way to create bioplastics using sugar and CO2 as opposed to involving oil in the process.

Thymidine; a type of sugar combined with CO2 at a low temperature is thought to make a non-toxic bioplastic, suitable for water bottles and glasses lenses.

Edible Food Wrappers

Corn and shellfish have been used by scientists at the University of Otago to create edible food packaging.

Not only does this development prevent the need for oil or other toxic chemicals, but its edible property prevents the need for waste too.

This type of bioplastic is safe for both human and animal consumption which could have a great impact on marine plastic pollution.

There are many other bioplastic experiments that are constantly developing which is great news. Contact us today to find out how we’re environmentally conscious about the plastic products we use at Rayda Plastics.
