Plastic in Space Explorations – How it’s Helping us Reach the Stars

Space is a wonderous place with many challenges and extremities that we must prepare ourselves for when taking off. When we think of space, we often just picture the iconic spacesuit and rocket, but what isn’t so commonly mentioned is how all of this is prepared, and that would be using plastic!

So, how is plastic used in space preparation?

Plastic is a lightweight, flexible, strong, chemical-resistant material that is also a poor conductor of electricity, making it the perfect material for space-related equipment.

Let’s take a closer look at these features:

Flexibility – Plastics can be moulded into complex shapes and designs, allowing for a range of innovative space engineering solutions. The list is never-ending for the amount of equipment in space that is created from plastic, from space helmets, spacecraft components, and satellites, to all kinds of bearings, insulators, electrical connectors, valves, regulators, and much more. The space world we know today wouldn’t exist without plastic.

Lightweight – When exploring space, weight is an important factor that must be considered. The heavier the equipment, the more expensive it will be. Plastic ensures the weight is kept to a minimum without compromising any features or functionalities, meaning costs are kept as low as possible.

Chemical-Resistant – Spacecrafts and equipment can encounter a range of corrosive agents, so it’s essential for them to be able to withstand these conditions. Plastics are resistant to chemicals, which is why most space equipment is made from them. Being chemical resistant allows these plastic materials to last longer, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and/or replacement.

Poor Conductors of Electricity – Materials that are poor conductors of electricity are essential for space travel as they prevent any unwanted or dangerous electrical discharges, which ensures the safety of equipment and astronauts.

Without plastic, space travel would not be what it is today and who knows what innovation plastic has to offer space travel in the future?
