PRP Optoelectronics are a company specialising in the design and manufacture of custom LED arrays. The company has been involved in the use of LED arrays in Photodynamic Therapy since 1993 with our light sources being used in a number of pre-clinical and clinical trials.
Our devices have been successfully used in the treatment of skin cancers, acne and cosmetic therapies. All systems are designed and manufactured in our EN 46002 certified facility.
Intense light sources have a number of potential applications in medical treatment. Among these is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), a process that can be used for the selective destruction of cells without harming adjacent tissue. The technique uses special photosensitising agents which when irradiated with light at a specific wavelength, react with oxygen in tissues to bring about cell death. The treatment has been applied to a number of malignant and benign skin disorders. Laser sources have been used in PDT, but have disadvantages in cost and also because special precautions have to be taken in their use. Specially designed LED sources can be used in PDT and have advantages in that they are intrinsically less dangerous in use and can be employed in clinics with out the need for special precautions.
PRP Optoelectronics were involved in the use of LED arrays in Photodynamic Therapy as early as 1993 with our LED light sources being used in a number of pre-clinical and clinical trials, in a number of sites, including The Royal London Hospital, the Amsterdam Cancer Institute and University College Hospital. Light sources were developed with outputs designed for use with wavelengths matching absorption spectra of specific photosensitisers with the LED outputs centred around at 630nm, 652nm and 690nm. With careful thermal design PRP showed that it was possible to achieve output intensities higher than 200mW/cm2 uniformly over areas as large as 16cm2. Following successful clinical trials in conjunction with medical teams, PRP designed produced and sold the PRP100 (shown above) for use in hospitals and dermatology clinics. Other products have been designed and supplied for clinical trials with other photosensitisers.
