Since the purchase of their first 3D printing machine 2 years ago, the technology has become a valuable asset to Phoenix's day to day business, and coupled with their 3D design capabilities, is helping customers accelerate the design cycle of new projects. Its success has led to further investment in a new 3D Printer which allows improved production of rapid prototype samples. The new machine, a MakerBot Replicator Z18, has a larger printing capacity capable of producing shapes with dimensions 305 x 305 x 460mm with an accuracy of 100microns per layer. Another added benefit is the faster printing speed, allowing complex shapes to be created in much shorter cycle times. Typical parts that are printed using the system include brackets, housings and enclosures. These compomemts can be printed to scale and used as an initial space model to check for fit and highlight potential installation issues. These 3D printed enclosures are often used with real wires and connectors to simulate the final design. The technology also complements Phoenix’s moulding capabilities, allowing a scale replica of a bespoke moulded part to be created before any investment into mould tooling, giving the customer a physical interpretation of the finished component.
