Using ultrasonic testing principles, Phased Array Corrosion Mapping is a sophisticated volumetric inspection approach. Another use of PAUT is the multi-directional imaging of inaccessible backwall corrosion (or other wall thickness decreases such as abrasion or erosion).
Ultrasonic volumetric beams may now be produced using an electronic beam steering technique that provides for enhanced sensitivity as well as fast data gathering and comprehensive fault resolution. An X-Y-axis scanner equipped with an array of ultrasonic components collects circumferential and axial data from an asset using the Corrosion Mapping inspection method.

To characterise defects in depth, a high-sensitivity phased array beam can be used to detect deflected and/or diffracted signals.
