VELCRO® Brand was first launched in the late 1950s after Swiss electrical engineer George de Mestral wondered why burdock seeds clung to his woollen clothes and his dog. From this, he invented his first touch fastener and patented it in 1950, and by the end of this decade, he had refined the product and released it into the world.
