The material used to manufacture a scaffold tower affects its weight, portability and suitability for different working environments. Aluminium, steel and GRP each have advantages, and the safest choice depends on the job rather than simply selecting the strongest-looking option.
Aluminium is the most common choice for mobile access towers because it combines strength with relatively low weight. That makes towers easier to transport, assemble and move around a site. Steel can provide greater mass and durability for heavier-duty applications, although the additional weight makes frequent repositioning more demanding.
GRP, or fibreglass, is particularly valuable when work takes place near electrical hazards. Because the material is non-conductive, it provides an additional level of protection where metal towers would introduce unnecessary risk. It can therefore be appropriate for electrical maintenance, rail environments and other specialist applications.
Whatever material is chosen, the tower still needs to comply with the relevant standards and be assembled correctly. Height, safe working load, ground conditions and stabilisation are just as important as the construction material itself.
