Selecting the right scaffold tower starts with measuring the height of the actual work area. Guessing from the number of storeys or choosing a tower simply because it is taller than the building can lead to unnecessary cost or an unsafe working position.
Three measurements are commonly used. Platform height is the level where the user stands, overall tower height includes the guardrail structure, and working height normally adds approximately two metres to the platform height to allow for comfortable reach. The working height should comfortably cover the highest point of the task without forcing the user to stretch.
Base width and ground conditions also affect the correct tower choice. Taller towers need greater stability and may require stabilisers or outriggers. Uneven ground can call for adjustable legs, while soft surfaces need suitable base support. Indoor work may also be limited by door widths, ceiling clearance and confined spaces.
The job itself should guide the final selection. Painting, gutter work, electrical maintenance, stairwells and work around obstacles can all require different tower designs even when the working height is similar.
