Mobile Tower Scaffold Maximum Height: UK Regulations and Safety Standards

Mobile scaffold towers must be used within safe height limits, with the correct stabilisers and configuration for the environment. In the UK, freestanding mobile towers are generally limited to a maximum platform height of 12m indoors and 8m outdoors when assembled in accordance with the relevant manufacturer's instructions and BS EN 1004 requirements.

Working height and platform height are not the same measurement. Platform height is where the operative stands, while working height usually allows roughly another two metres for normal reach. That distinction is important when ordering equipment because specifying the wrong figure can result in a tower that is either unnecessarily high or unable to reach the job safely.

Outdoor work needs extra consideration because wind has a much greater effect on taller towers. Ground conditions, stabiliser or outrigger use, tower width and the manufacturer's maximum permitted configuration all need to be checked before work begins.

Where a project needs to exceed the normal freestanding limits, a tied or more specialised scaffold arrangement may be required. Those systems should be planned and installed by suitably competent professionals rather than extending a standard mobile tower beyond its intended design.
