Double Cardanic
What does ‘Cardanic’ mean anyway? It’s no secret that the world of engineering can be a confusing one filled with unknown terms, phrases, and measurements. We’ve found that there are a few terms in particular that tend to stump our customers more than others. One of those terms is ‘cardanic’, which we often use in the description of our couplings. Given the largely unknown (and sometimes befuddling) nature of the term, we’ve decided to dig up its origin and definition for your reading pleasure. The term ‘cardanic’ is unsurprisingly derived from the name of its inventor, Gerolamo Cardano. He was one of the most influential mathematicians of the Renaissance and a very busy, talented inventor. He partially invented many mechanical devices that we still use today. Of his many contributions, some of his most noteworthy inventions include the combination lock, the gimbal (which is used in compasses), and the cardan shaft with universal joints. He also contributed to the creation of the hypocycloid, which is “a special plane curve generated by the trace of a fixed point on a small circle that rolls within a larger circle”.
