J+S Present Low Profile Array paper at UDT conference
J+S has recently presented a technical paper at Underwater Defence Technology (UDT), on the Low Profile Array (LPA), a 16mm diameter passive acoustic line array, that can be used to augment sensor capabilities of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV’s). The conference and combined exhibition, is held annually around Europe, with this year’s held at the Excel centre in London. The presentation of the LPA paper was very well attended and delegates from all around the world expressed interest in this exciting innovation. This led to a good number of enquiries at the J+S stand, where the LPA was on show, along with other innovative acoustic transducer products. Considerable interest was also shown in the latest miniature Integrated Acoustic Sensor, which combines a high performance wideband spherical hydrophone with a miniaturised low noise, low power preamplifier within the hydrophone itself. The product was initially developed in response to a demand from marine scientists for a sensing system to detect mammals at sea and operates with acoustic signatures up to 65KHz in depths of up to 2000m. The system can operate autonomously for long periods. This product is now being used successfully by the Nato Underwater Research Centre (NURC) in Italy who, following the completion of recent trials, a spokes person commented: “We tested equipment that employed the new JS-B100-C4DS-PA, the small sphere with the amp fitted inside. They performed extremely well throughout, providing high quality and very clean acoustic data.” Reflecting on the overall outcome of the conference and exhibition, Paul Parsons, Defence Business Development Group Manager, observed: “This was a very encouraging show for J+S. The high level of interest from such a wide range of industry experts confirms our belief that the LPA is a significant technology breakthrough. Its small size and lightweight features opens up new market possibilities in areas such as UUV’s, ASW and Torpedo Detection from small surface vessels, harbor security and mammal monitoring. We are now engaged in discussions with a number of different companies discussing opportunities now possible through the use of the LPA. Furthermore, NURC’s endorsement of the performance of another one of our miniature integrated sensors for mammal monitoring shows the breadth of market application for our underlying miniature acoustic sensor technology” Further Information J+S Ltd operates from sites in Barnstaple and Aberdeen, employing 130 people engaged on a range of engineering and production activities, primarily in naval support, marine renewable energy and subsea asset management for the North Sea Oil and Gas exploration markets.
