Houlder were asked to survey an Enhanced Pacesetter semi-submersible drilling unit operating off the West African coast. A planned 2010 dry docking saw Houlder attend the vessel and prepare feasibility studies and pre-engineering for several repairs and upgrades.
The largest planned work package was upgrading the unit’s accommodation modules. Both stand alone modules and modules integrated into existing structure were investigated by the team. The latter involved considering extending the unit’s overall structure and replacing the helideck.
To undertake the survey, three members of Houlder’s team flew to Nigeria to act as project manager, structural engineer and structural draughtsman onboard the rig. The bulk of the design and engineering work was carried out at Houlder’s office in Aberdeen.
