DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF A NEW MEZZANINE DECK

Design, Structural Analysis, Construction Supervision, Installation Houlder successfully installed a new Mezzanine Deck on the Well Enhancer well intervention vessel. Helix Well Ops had identified a need to increase the operational versatility of the purpose built vessel. As part of the resulting upgrade they contracted Houlder on a turnkey basis to increase usable deck space. Following a feasibility study Houlder recommended adding mezzanine decking in the Well Enhancer’s aft section continuous with existing mezzanine decks and an independent forward port section above the corral deck. Houlder then went on to provide the concept, detailed design, structural verification and analysis required for this significant enhancement. FEED study work undertaken established the arrangement functionality, required structural strength for the mezzanine deck and the vessel and the impact on the vessel stability, motions, station keeping and systems. As a result, Houlder prepared a design giving Helix 302m2 of additional deck space rated at 2.5t per m2. Once designed, the steel mezzanine structure was fabricated by Aberdeen Fabrications Limited, under Houlder’s supervision, before the successful installation on the vessel in Leith Harbour, Edinburgh. The project is the latest example of a significant turnkey contract delivered by Houlder from feasibility through to installation.
