They are designed for different operating conditions. Friction buffer stops are energy-absorbing devices that arrest a train in a controlled manner; fixed buffer stops mainly mark and protect the end of track at very low speeds; hydraulic buffer stops are used where energy absorption is required but space is limited for a sliding friction system.
