Traffic Signal Lens

Motaway signal lens HMTooling supplied tooling and plastic mouldings for a motorway signal lens. This lens is used as the flashing warning light on the majority of motorway signs. The Tooling is made from P20 steel. The cavity is highly polished and the underside incorporates at least 256 optical inserts. These were produced by high speed machining the small angled faces. each insert incorporates up to 256 of these faces. The lens is fed in the middle by a single hot tip bush, this gives even filling and reduces stress in the part. The part is moulded from Polycarbonate coloured using masterbatch at 2% to give the required shade of yellow. The lens is impact tested by dropping a heavy steel ball from a set height. The part also needs to be scratch resistant so has a special hard coating applied to it.
