Recognising excellence and creativity in dance, the National Dance Awards honoured the leading artists, performers and choreographers from across the industry.
The National Dance Awards took place in London at the Barbican Centre on 9 June, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Critics’ Circle awards.
This year, nearly 400 recommendations were submitted by dance critics for performances and work seen throughout 2024, from which 88 nominees were selected.
Harlequin sponsored the Best Modern Choreography award again this year, which was presented to choreographer Kyle Abraham for his piece titled Love Letter (on shuffle), performed by New York City Ballet at Sadler’s Wells. This marks Kyle’s second win in this category.
The award winners are chosen by a panel of 60 professional dance critics. This year’s awards honoured achievements across genres ranging from ballet, hip-hop and kathak.
For the first time, the Dancing Times Award for Best Male Dancer had two winners, Tommy Franzén and Aakash Odedra. They both also won a second award with Tommy receiving the Outstanding Male Modern Performance award, and Aakash winning the Outstanding Male Classical Performance award.
The Principles of Classical Dance, a co-production between BalletBoyz and The Royal Ballet, was awarded the Marquee TV Award for Best Dance Film. Filmed at the English National Ballet, the production featured Royal Ballet dancers performing on a Harlequin floor.
Acosta Danza received the Best Mid-Scale Company award, presented to its Founder, Carlos Acosta, who is also Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet. Carlos and his team recently worked with Harlequin on the renovation of the Acosta Dance Centre in Woolwich, where Harlequin floors were chosen to support the needs of professional dancers.
Harlequin was proud to support the National Dance Awards once again this year. The event is an inspiring celebration of the incredible talent within the dance community.
Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and winners!
