THE BEST WAY TO TRANSPORT A FORKLIFT
THE BEST WAY TO TRANSPORT A FORKLIFT Forklifts are here to handle and transport raw materials and goods safely, efficiently and in large quantities. They are not classed as automobiles and therefore cannot be driven on a road like a vehicle. However, forklifts are often needed to be transported from one worksite to another and therefore there are measures that must be taken to ensure a safe and efficient journey. We’ve put together this guide to help you with the best way to transport a forklift: Who can transport a forklift? To transport a forklift you must be over the age of 19 and must carry a C1+E licence. This licence allows you to use a tailgate, flatbed or flatbed trailer, which is essential to transport such heavy machinery. How to transport your forklift safely Here are some key things to do to make sure your forklift reaches its destination safely, and on time. CHECK THE DIMENSIONS OF YOUR FORKLIFT MODEL You can’t use the same form of transport for all forklifts, as each model will have different weight and height specifications, and therefore you will need to get a quote from a transporter, or if you have a forklift trailer you will need to check the maximum capacity that it is able to hold, before setting off. LOADING YOUR FORKLIFT If using your own forklift trailer, loading your forklift onto the trailer is simple. Always reverse the forklift onto the trailer, parking it in the very centre to stop the trailer from swaying due to an imbalance of weight. USE RATCHETS AND CHAINS Once your forklift is loaded onto the trailer or flatbed, you can fasten your forklift down by securing the chains to the edges of the trailer. CHECK THE FUEL SUPPLY For diesel or petrol forklifts, make sure the compartment containing the fuel is safe and secure to prevent spillage in transit. If you have an electrical model, be sure to charge your forklift before transit to ensure there is enough charge to drive the forklift off the transport vehicle on arrival. We also suggest disconnecting the battery terminal to prevent arcing. FIND THE CLEARANCE HEIGHT It is important to know the clearance height of the forklift when being transported as this can determine which route you take to the destination as you may not be able to use certain roads, bridges or underpasses. Trucks and trailers to transport your forklift AUTOMATED TAILGATE: An automated tailgate is the biggest and safest form of transporting a forklift. This option allows you to transfer large forklifts in their quantities as it has a very large weight limit. However, when choosing this option you will need to plan a route without low bridges etc. FLATBED: A flatbed truck also allows for multiple forklifts to be transported. However, it differs from an automated tailgate as it is not fully enclosed and therefore the use of chains and ratchets is essential to keep the forklifts secure and safe. TOW TRAILER The most affordable option when transporting forklifts is a tow trailer. However, tow trailers are often only able to transport 1 or 2 forklifts at a time due to the risk of trailer sway. This is where the trailer will move in a different direction from the vehicle towing the trailer which is extremely dangerous for the driver and other vehicles on the road. Hire a forklift Moving forklifts from place to place can be a hassle, and can be stressful to ensure you are doing it correctly. Forklift hire can be a great solution if you only need an extra forklift for a short period of time, or at a work site that is far away from your original location. This also limits the dangers of damaging your own forklifts in transit, giving you peace of mind. At H&F we have a casual hire fleet numbering over 100 trucks covering a wide range of specifications.
