SAFELY OPERATING YOUR FORKLIFT TRUCK IN THE RAIN

With August set to be a wet one, we thought it would be a good time to do a post about how to safely operate your forklift truck in the rain. Safety is a main priority for anyone operating a forklift truck and rain can obviously throw up some obstacles. Here are some tips to make sure you’re working as safely as possible whilst it’s raining! Is your forklift truck suitable for use in rain? First and foremost you have to check whether the forklift you’re using is actually suitable for use in the rain. Some electric forklifts, for example, are not equipped to deal with rainy conditions. Be mindful of visibility Visibility should be a top priority in all weather conditions but is especially important when it’s raining. If you’re working in low-visibility conditions due to the rain, make sure all your safety lights are working before you begin. You can also use your lights and your horn to help avoid accidents in the rain. If visibility is too poor and you don’t feel comfortable operating the forklift in the weather conditions, then don’t. Take it slow When it’s raining, take extra care when maneuvering your forklift truck. Whenever you are out and about on a rainy day, just slow things down a bit to ensure your safety. You can most likely do everything you would do if it weren’t raining but it’s best to be safe than sorry. Wear appropriate rain gear Operating a forklift truck safely isn’t just about the forklift truck itself. It’s about you too. Healthy and comfortable operators make for safe operators. When it’s raining, be sure to wear appropriate clothing such as waterproof jackets and pants, non-slip boots and something reflective if possible. Complete a check of the forklift truck Before operating your forklift truck in the rain, check it’s in full working order. Complete a forklift servicing and ensure any repairs that need doing are completed. Preparing for the rain will go a long way in ensuring your safe and secure whilst operating your forklift truck.
