A first for Essex Laser - A paper plane, made of metal
Essex Laser just undertook an interesting and quite challenging commission for the sculptor Samuel Zealey. Samuel is a well known British sculpture who has won numerous awards for his work. He attended Wimbledon College of Art and completed a BA in Fine Art and then went on to develop his sculpture practice in a live workspace on a farm in Essex, before continuing an MA in sculpture at the Royal College of Art under Richard Wentworth CBE. Samuel’s work reflects the current environmental climate that we find ourselves in. He uses visual language to highlight the issues of modern technology and its advances and shows how it affects the world today. He’s always has a passion for the sciences, engineering, invention and the environment and combines and explores these interests in his sculpture. Samuel commissioned Essex Laser to use their Laser cutting skills to create a metal plane, i.e. a paper plane but made out of metal. Mark Millar at Essex Laser explained why this was rather difficult “ We told Samuel that this would be hard to do as Metal sadly doesn’t fold like paper. In the end we cut the parts and Samuel folded them himself." The plane was originally cut from top quality prime CR4 mild steel but Samuel gave it a rather authentic rusty look for the finished article. Mark Millar said “Essex Laser were delighted to be involved in the creation of this piece of art, even in a small way, we like a bit of a challenge now and again and we are always happy to try and help our clients with something unusual, if that’s what they need."
