A UK-based manufacturer of pipeline monitoring instrumentation engaged EPIT Group for specialist CE Marking consultancy to assess and support the certification of a new speed control instrument intended for use in Zone 1 hazardous areas. The client had a specific requirement from their end customer for the equipment to be CE marked prior to deployment.
Challenge
The project involved the development of a speed control instrument that would operate within a Zone 1 hazardous area. The client’s design included several compliance sensitive components, such as rotating parts, battery operated modules, and externally mounted sensors. These sensors required a suitable method of explosion protection, and the overall equipment needed to meet strict conformity requirements.
A key risk was that failure to achieve CE compliance would not only prevent the product from entering the market but also trigger costly design changes and extended timelines. The client required technical expertise to evaluate the equipment against applicable regulations and advise on an achievable certification route.
Solution
EPIT delivered a focused CE Marking consultancy programme to guide the client from concept to certification:
Feasibility Review and Zoning Requirements
EPIT carried out an initial feasibility study to assess whether the proposed equipment could be made suitable for use in a Zone 1 environment. This included reviewing mechanical and electrical design elements in relation to suitable type of explosion protection.
Explosion Protection Evaluation
The consultants advised on the most suitable protection strategy for the system. Intrinsic safety (Ex i) was recommended for the sensor interface, while other components were aligned with relevant protection concepts to meet safety requirements.
Design Support and Standards Application
EPIT provided input throughout the design process to ensure the equipment conformed to harmonised EN standards applicable under CE Marking regulations. This included reviewing design decisions, documentation, and test planning.
Certification Pathway Support
EPIT’s guidance ensured the sample and technical documentation were prepared in line with criteria of the relevant standards. The product was successfully CE marked upon completion of testing.
Results
The client obtained ATEX certification for their speed control instrument, enabling them to CE mark the product and was able to meet the operational and regulatory requirements set by their customer. Following the successful outcome, the client returned to EPIT for further support on a subsequent compliance project.
Client Impact
CE Compliance Achieved: the client met all certification requirements through targeted guidance and a structured compliance route.
Commercial Opportunity Secured: CE Marking enabled the client to deliver the product into a regulated market and fulfil contractual obligations.
Technical Assurance: EPIT’s experience ensured the proposed protection methods and design decisions were fit for purpose and certification ready.
EPIT’s CE Marking consultancy enabled this instrumentation manufacturer to bring a complex, high integrity product to market while meeting safety and regulatory standards essential for use in hazardous environments.
