The measurement of vining pea maturity continues to be the most important means of assessing the optimum time of harvest and ultimate crop value. The Martin Ten-derometer has been in use for many years, but now Mark White reports on an ex-citing new instrument designed and manufactured by Dodman Ltd. Usually, new pea maturity measuring installments are met with great interest by the industry, but ultimately, due to a combination of cost, considerable effort of the change to the nation-wide arrangements and a belief in the 'better the devil you know' concept, none have ever been taken up. Currently, we find ourselves in a situation with ageing machines, that are still able to give reliable results through the PGRO standardization scheme, but becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and repair.
