Press Release: NASA’s Orion Spacecraft Receives Unique Testing from Data Physics Controller
NASA’s Orion Spacecraft Receives Unique Testing from Multi-Axis Vibration System with Data Physics Controller San Jose, CA — November 09, 2015 – Orion, the multi-purpose crew vehicle spacecraft being developed by NASA, is getting intense vibration testing from Data Physics and Team Corporation products. The mult-axis testing provided by Team and Data Physics aims to simulate the vibration of launch. NASA.gov explains Orion’s purpose: “NASA’s Orion spacecraft is built to take humans farther than they’ve ever gone before. Orion will serve as the exploration vehicle that will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during the space travel, and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities.” Team Corporation built the large capacity vibration system used there, which is commonly called the Mechanical Vibration Facility (MVF). 16 vertical and 4 horizontal actuators give the MVF the capability to test using 6 degrees of freedom. Data Physics powerful Matrix Controllers, some of the brains behind the operation, are needed to control the actuators. “This testing equipment is so unique. Nobody has ever built anything like this before,” said Jerry Carek, manager of the Space Power Facility. These series of tests should prove Orion’s readiness for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit and possible missions to Mars.
