A phased closure of TI’s plant in Greenock, Inverclyde, means that hundreds of jobs will be lost before late 2017.
Currently, 365 employees work at the Greenock site, and job roles within manufacturing, engineering, support and management will be affected.
TI, a global semi-conductor company has planned to move production to sits in Germany, Japan and the US, claiming that the move will make production more cost-effective.
They claim that they are ‘just in proposal stage’ at the moment, and that ‘ending manufacturing operations is a lengthy business.’
The announcement from TI has not been well received by all. Fergus Ewing, Scotland’s Business Minister has expressed that he is disappointed at the news.
His concerns are for the local community who will be heavily affected by the loss of jobs, but has also stated that the Scottish government will do all they can do secure a long-term future for anybody declared redundant.
Inverclyde’s council leader Stephen McCabe is also concerned about the decision, and described as a ‘stunning blow’ to the Scottish economy.
It appears that Texas Instrument’s best attempt to become more cost effective has had a huge negative impact on the local economy that has supported the company for so long.
