The recent earthquakes to hit south-east Japan have halted certain sections of the country’s electronics supply chain.
Leading component manufacturers such as Sony, Mitsubishi Electric and Renesas are just some of the businesses to pause their production lines.
While the medium-to-long-term ramifications are yet to become clear, we are aware of some short-term disruptions.
Renesas Electronics Corp, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of semiconductors and microcontrollers, confirmed that it halted production after its Kumamoto City-based plant sustained damage in the earthquakes.
The chipmaker has stated that they would undertake a thorough investigation of the entire facility before making a decision when to resume production.
Although Sony’s plants in the prefectures of Nagasaki and Oita recommenced after a brief pause, the electronics giant announced that its Technology Center in the district of Kikuchi is set to be inactive for the near future.
Haruka Kitagawa, a spokesperson for Sony, confirmed to the Japanese and International press that the damage was minimal and that the company was “checking...when we can restart.”
However, Kenichi Saita, an analyst at Mizuho Securities, was much more cautious in his outlook. “There is a concern on the impact on production and shipments,” he wrote in a report.
The facility primarily creates image sensors, optical, and micro-display devices, and makes items used by leading smartphone manufacturers, such as owners Sony and Apple.
Similarly, Mitsubishi Electric also announced that it had temporarily suspended production lines at its Kumamoto-based facility.
