Although Bombardier have just landed themselves a huge contract in Canada, they are having to severely cut 7,000 jobs worldwide, 1,300 of which are in the UK.
According to Bombardier, the reason behind the sudden axing of employment is failing orders. Sales at the Canadian company fell 10% to £12.7bn in 2015.
The job cuts are due to take place over the next two years, and will affect Belfast and Derby. This will have a huge affect on Northern Ireland’s economy, as Bombardier Aerospace is currently the largest manufacturing company that the county has, and employs around 6,000 people.
The unemployment rate of Ireland is already quite high, and this set back will only increase it more.
