In Memoriam : Edward M. Marwell, 1922-2010 Founder, President and Chairman Emeritus
MT. KISCO, NY, Sept. 7, 2010 — It is with great sadness that Curtis Instruments announces the passing of its founder, president and chairman emeritus, Edward M. Marwell. Mr. Marwell was an international business leader and global exporter, who served as president of Curtis Instruments from 1960 – 2001, and as chairman until 2003. During his tenure, the company grew into a key supplier of instrumentation, controls and integrated systems to the global electric-vehicle market with representation in all major world markets through 13 subsidiaries and 1,000 employees. Under Mr. Marwell’s leadership, Curtis developed superior electronic technology for material handling, industrial, aerial lift, golf, light-on-road, airport, and personal mobility applications. The products he developed with Curtis Instruments were also used by NASA, which installed numerous Curtis visual readout Elapsed Time Indicators on each Lunar Module to monitor electrical systems. Between 1968–1972, Curtis products were launched in 13 different lunar modules. In 1971, NASA used Curtis electronic meters to monitor the batteries of the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicles used to explore the moon’s surface. Mr. Marwell was recognized for his international business endeavors with numerous prestigious awards, including the Order of the Madara Horseman award by the Bulgarian government. He will be remembered by business associates, customers, employees and the local community as a man of profound humanity, inherent decency and fairness, with an unwavering spirit. All of us at Curtis Instruments are most grateful to Edward Marwell who had dedicated forty-five years to growing and shaping our company. His legacy of strong vision and special people talents have been a guiding force, inspiring us to tap the best within ourselves and share in his devotion to the company. His natural optimism has been contagious—and it has led to identifying future opportunities, developing new products and markets and nurturing wonderful relationships around the world. A 1943 graduate of Columbia College and its School of Engineering, Edward Marwell served in the United States Air Force during World War II in the Pacific theater in Occupied Japan. After working as a Program Manager for General Precision Laboratory in Pleasantville, New York, he founded Curtis Instruments, Inc. in 1960, together with Dr. Curtis Beusman. Because of Edward Marwell’s enlightened approach to business, Curtis established international status early on. In addition to the subsidiaries in Western Europe and Asia, he opened subsidiaries in the former East Germany, China and Bulgaria long before other US companies. Through his acceptance and promotion of other cultures, Edward Marwell paved the way for an atmosphere of cross-cultural awareness within Curtis. Today, Curtis is a successful global company as a result. In addition to his accomplishment at Curtis, Edward Marwell has been a big proponent of devoting time and resources to the local community. Among his many efforts, he funded a scholarship at Columbia College, and he was a board member of the American College in Sofia, Bulgaria. For over 50 years, Mr. Marwell has been a dedicated civic leader and resident of Mount Kisco, New York in Westchester County. He played an integral role in the growth of the community, serving as Trustee for the Village of Mount Kisco, Highway Commissioner, Police Commissioner and Chairman of the Human Rights Commission. His support of local endeavors also includes the formation of the Bedford Central School District, the founding of a local synagogue and many other philanthropic endeavors, both locally and internationally. In 2000, he was recognized as the “Man of the Year” by the Mount Kisco Chamber of Commerce because of his lifelong support of the local community.
