The Essex Shed Network

The Essex Shed Network is a remarkable charity working to reduce social isolation by establishing community-based workshop spaces, known as "Sheds." These hubs provide a welcoming environment for both men and women to connect, create, and support one another. As a not-for-profit initiative, it is delivered through a partnership between Maldon & District CVS and UCAN, with essential funding from Essex County Council. The mission is simple yet powerful: to support the development of new Men’s Sheds across Essex while providing ongoing guidance to ensure the sustainability of existing ones.

Over the course of several weeks, I had the privilege of visiting a number of these sheds to document the unique sense of community, creativity, and purpose they foster. Through interviews with participants, known affectionately as “Shedders,” I was able to hear first-hand the deeply personal stories behind their involvement and capture the profound impact these spaces have on individual lives.

It was important that the resulting film not only celebrated the outstanding work being done across the network, but also served as an invitation to inspire others to get involved, join a Shed, or consider setting one up in their local area. Above all, the aim was to communicate the life-changing value of connection, shared experience, and belonging.
