Road tunnel conditions can change quickly as traffic volumes and vehicle emissions vary throughout the day. Continuous air quality monitoring gives operators real-time information so ventilation can respond to actual conditions rather than running continuously at maximum capacity.
At the PortMiami Tunnel, eight CODEL air quality monitoring systems support the control of 44 ventilation fans. As monitored conditions change, the ventilation system can respond accordingly, helping maintain suitable air quality while avoiding unnecessary fan operation.
CODEL says this approach can support safer tunnel operation, improve visibility of changing conditions and reduce avoidable energy and maintenance demands.
