WATER LEAK DETECTION TAPE

Water Leak Detection tape is a sensor that enables you to monitor critical areas for water leaks. It offers an early warning system that can prevent costly repairs and safeguard valuable assets. In this article you will find out more about how water leak detection tape works. Exploring its functionality, installation and maintenance.

The leak detection tape features a male and female connector on each end. You connect one end to a signal cable leading to the Water Leak Alarm Panel, while the other end connects to an End-of-Line plug containing a diode.

What is the Water Leak Detection Tape made of?

The detection tape consists of four plastic cables and two stainless steel sensor wires. These plastic cables are interwoven and welded together to prevent contact between the two steel wires. This enables the cable to form a solid mass that is flexible yet robust. Enabling you to place the detection tape in tight and confined spaces.

How does the Tape work?

The operation of a water detection cable is based on the principle of electrical conductivity. When water or any conductive liquid comes into contact with the cable, it reduces the resistance and creates a conductive path between the two stainless steel wires. In the absence of water, the insulating material between the stainless-steel wires prevents electrical conductivity between them, keeping the circuit open. However, when water touches the cable, it acts as a conductor, allowing electricity to flow between the two wires and completing the circuit. The completion of the circuit triggers an alarm, indicating the presence of water.

Our water leak detection tape stands out from the competition due to a unique feature: it utilizes a bi-directional (AC) signal. This innovation significantly extends the lifespan of these sensors by effectively preventing electrolysis. How do you secure the Tape in place?

Ensuring proper installation is crucial for the correct performance. Begin by thoroughly cleaning and drying the surface where the detection tape will be applied. Next, carefully adhere the tape along the areas prone to water leakage, such as pipes, appliances, or flooring. We recommend securing the detection tape in place using adhesive floor clips. Ensuring a snug fit to the floor or drip tray surface will facilitate accurate detection.

How do you re-used the tape after a leak?

Being a solid mass, the cable is less susceptible to damage and can be handled, cleaned or wiped down without fear of damage. The composition of the detection rope prevents water soaking into the wires. This enables you to easily clean the tape and remove any residues. Allowing you to re-use the detection tape after it has detected a leak.

How to look after the detection tape

When installing, make sure that you do not excessively pull on the connectors that join the signal cable with detection tape. This can pull the sensing wires out of the connector causing it to fail. In the event that this does happen, you will have to send the cable back to us for repair. Our single and two zone water leak alarm – type LD2-3 has a safety feature called ‘Fault Alarm’. When the detection tape is damaged or is pulled loose, it will trigger an alarm within the panel.

After installation, you can regularly inspect the detection tape for signs of wear and damage. Check that the cable still works by pouring a small amount of water onto it. This should trigger an alarm in the panel. Alternatively, you can use a metal wire brush to touch the detection tape.
