At this year’s Chelsea Flower Show there seems to be a number of gardens that explore and support health conditions. From well know conditions, like asthma to lesser known gynaecological cancers, this show raises awareness with many gardens to aid and soothe people suffering with these conditions.
The Lady Garden Foundation ‘Silent No More’ Garden
Designed by by Darren Hawkes
This garden is designed to encourage conversations about women’s intimate health to save lives. This space aims to break stigma about gynecological issues. This immersive and beautifully planted garden features a winding path to a central safe space where women can discuss issues in order to seek help. There are five sculptures that represent the five main gynecological cancers with a central water feature that flows through deep rills into intimate nooks.
Parkinson’s UK – A Garden For Every Parkinson’s Journey with John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford Parkinson’s Centre of Excellence
Designed by Arit Anderson
Inspired by her sister’s health journey, this garden is designed as a sanctuary to support those navigating this complex neurological condition. It has wide accessible paths to help those with mobility issues. The sound, feel and movement of the water feature hand-rill, provides a sensory element to aid those experiencing the common symptom of freezing, doubling a supportive hand rail. The sunny boarders are planned to uplift and energize patients, while the surrounding verdant woodland provides a calm space for reflection. There is a wooden arch to rest beneath and after dark there is harmonious space for those who struggle with insomnia.
The design is partitioned into three key areas, each with its own colour palette and sensory focus. The calm space, which has bright but scentless flowers to uplift, the restful zone with muted tones and woodland planting and the night area for those suffering with insomnia in greens and whites.
The Asthma and Lung UK Breathing Space Garden
Designed by Angus Thompson
The whole aim of this garden design is as it says in the title- to create breathing space. A calm space to relax and take a moment away from the rest of the world. Set on the edge of a serene woodland with accessible paths, therapeutic, low allergen planting in soft greens and whites. There’s a tranquil ‘yoga platform’, beside sunning water and a pond for a soothing, peaceful environment.
This is a space to recover and reconnect with nature. There are several rest points to sit; each leading to the heart of the garden. There are two pine trees reside, known for their antioxidant and immune boosting qualities.
This space has pops of pink, purple and orange to represent the colours of Asthma and Lung UK.
