GARDENS FOR GOOD: PROJECT GIVING BACK HELPS CHARITIES GET TO RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

We’re thrilled to be back at Chelsea Flower Show and we’re getting stuck in with all the gardens have to offer. This is the year of the charity garden, yes they’re giving back more than fruits and flowers! Project Giving Back gave 12 UK charities the chance to apply for fully-funded gardens at 2022 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, mixing philanthropy with horticulture, to spread some goodness through gardens. We’re here witnessing the results of this amazing project, seeing the lucky winning gardens firsthand… Want to know which organisations got the dream-worthy chance to turn their garden design into a reality? Read on to find out! But first here are some of our favourite contenders… The garden bids chosen to benefit from Project Giving Back’s support highlight the work of many different, but all well-deserving, charities — with an extra light shone on those whose work has suffered, or become even more vital, as a result of the pandemic. The range for 2022 covers issues such as mental health, local community groups and organisations paving the way for urban public gardens. These wonderful gardens will continue to do good even after the crowds have left, as once RHS Chelsea Flower Show has finished they will be re-homed or re-used in a way that continues to benefit the cause or the community that it was designed to help. A few of the gardens who bid for a coveted plot at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year included: A TEXTILE GARDEN FOR FASHION REVOLUTION Fashion Revolution is one of the leading organisations in fashion activism, striving for a more sustainable future in the textile industry. Designed by Lottie Delamain, the Textile Garden draws attention to the marriage of plants and fashion, through suggestions of woven fabric and natural dye baths throughout the garden. ALDER HEY CHILDREN’S CHARITY GARDEN Created with the idea of curiosity and play in mind, Howard & Hugh Miller designed the Alder Hey Children’s Charity Garden to appeal to the magic of a child’s imagination, with elements such as an undulating landscape and edible herbs taking centre stage. This inviting outdoor space will be re-homed at the hospital in summer 2022. This charity raises crucial funds to help continue Alder Hey’s world-leading reputation for the 330,000 patients and families they care for every year. RNLI CHARITY GARDEN We have been blown away by the beauty of this garden at RHS Chelsea, featuring style hints of the organisations Georgian origins with contemporary garden design and a beautiful array of wildflowers, herbs and pollinators this is a garden we would like to recreate! HANDS OFF MANGROVE BY GROW2KNOW Founded in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, the non-profit organisation Grow2Know, is a community interest company with a powerful message. Designed by Grow2Know themselves, the Hands of Mangrove garden’s goal is to raise awareness of the effects of social and environmental injustice on communities. MIND CHARITY GARDEN Ever dreamt of a space where you could feel safe in opening up about your emotions? The Mind Garden aims to turn this imagined oasis into reality, and it has done just that as it was chosen to be brought to life at RHS Chelsea Flower Show! We are thrilled to have visited the Mind garden in person, here it is in all its serenity! REWILDING BRITAIN LANDSCAPE Putting the focus back on the pure beauty of nature, the Rewilding Britain Landscape garden showcases a completely natural outdoor sanctuary. Designed by Lulu Urquhart & Adam Hunt, this garden features native meadowland, a west-country stone wall and a dammed pool created by beavers. Aiming to highlight the wonderful abundance of the British outdoors, one that will continue to thrive as beavers are reintroduced to the UK. ST MUNGO’S PUTTING DOWN ROOTS GARDEN Creating a design for an outdoor space where people can feel at one with nature and plants — and using recycled materials to boot — Darryl Moore has designed a tranquil haven for St Mungo’s homeless charity garden. St Mungo’s help homeless people off the streets each night, and are one of the largest providers of outreach services in England. They also help thousands of people in recovery and aim to prevent future homelessness. Which was your favourite charity garden and did it get brought to life at this years Chelsea?
