How to extend the life of your treated timber
At Champion, we source our own timber, machine it ourselves and sell it direct to you. By doing this, we control the quality and continuity of supply and offer the best quality at competitive prices. Most importantly, we reject timber that we deem to be inadequate in order to guarantee that we only provide the best available. There are a couple of things that you can do to make sure your treated timber lasts as long as possible: Use an end grain preservative when cutting When cutting or drilling pressure treated timber you’ll need to treat the area affected with end-grain preservative. Doing so ensures that every exposed part is protected by a resistant barrier. Find fittings that will last as long as your timber Treated timber has a long life-expectancy and it’s important to find fittings that do too. When you’re using timber outside, what metal you use will be influenced by environmental factors such as moisture and temperature. You’ll need to find a metal with a greater corrosion resistance. Take a look at our range of timber fixings. What treatment do we use on our timber? All our timber is kiln dried and treated with Tanalith E. In the process, a vacuum is used to remove all moisture before pressure is applied to penetrate a preservative deep into the wood. TANALITH E is a water based wood preservative that contains copper and proven organic biocides. When impregnated into the timber the preservative components bond with the wood structure and cannot easily be removed. * The effects of Tanalith E treatment on timber Our pressure treated timber has a long-term protection against fungal and insect attack, including termites, for both in and out of ground contact. Initially it colours the timber a natural green that, when exposed to the outdoors, warms to a lovely brown colour. After long-term exposure, it will weather to a silver grey. At this point your timber is no less protected but some choose to stain it back to brown, or a colour of their choice.
