Chromated
Chromating, also known as alocroming and alodining, is a process that will not only provide a corrosion-resistant protective coating, but will also serve as an excellent primer for painting.Although pure aluminium oxidises with the air to produce its own protective coating, untreated alloys of aluminium offer little protection against corrosion, requiring a protective coating provided by processes such as chromating or anodising. When used in conjunction with each other, anodising and chromating can provide a sealant that doubles aluminium’s resistance to salt water when compared to just anodising.Chromated parts also retain their electrical conductivity to excellent degrees, and the process adds no weight to a component, and does not alter its pre-process dimensions. In addition to its corrosion resistant protection, the alocrom film will also repair itself if scratched, and marks such as fingerprints can be wiped off.Chromated parts also become hydrophobic as they age, providing excellent protection against water and moisture.
