Once a fire has broken out and been detected these systems will spray a variety of fluids to put out the fire. Water is a common extinguishing agent but is not ideal for all types of fire, and so foams and other chemical fire retardants are often sprayed which can present spraying challenges. Fire extinguishing systems need to be distinguished from fire protection systems that are designed to protect assets from fire rather than tackle the fire itself and fire prevention systems which are designed to lower the chance of fires or explosions occurring in the first place.
