With modern building materials getting lighter and lighter, it is important that they are adequately protected to both minimise damage from traffic flow and, more safety critically, avoid materials being displaced and falling onto pedestrians or vehicles below. Protection to stairwell walls adjacent to parking or traffic flow areas have been highlighted as a requirement to be considered in the ODPM report of Sept 2002.
