ASTELL SUPPLY FOUR FRONT LOADING AUTOCLAVES TO TEESSIDE UNIVERSITY
New sliding door circular and three benchtop units go to School of Science, Engineering & Design. Teesside University’s main campus is based in Middlesbrough, North East England, and has over 18,000 full and part-time students studying in the UK. The School of Science, Engineering & Design offers a range of courses from pre-degree through to PhD level study, covering subjects such as Life and Physical Science, Crime Scene Science, Forensic Science, Aerospace Engineering and Product Design. Astell recently supplied four new autoclaves to equip the National Horizons Centre (NHC), the University’s new £22.3m research, teaching and training facility located on Darlington’s Central Park. The NHC has been established to address the growth needs of the bio-based industries set to transform the UK economy, including biologics, industrial biotechnology and bio-pharmaceuticals. It will bring industry and academia together, to provide the sector with knowledge, skills, talent and facilities to support its development and growth. Three of the four autoclaves specified for the NHC are 63 litre Ecofill benchtop models. These will be used for sterilisation of media, glassware and waste (discard). Astell Ecofill autoclaves benefit from an in-built water tank and recirculation system which significantly reduces water consumption. Each of the three units is also fitted with Load Sensed Process Timing, fan cooling and ethernet connection options. The fourth unit, a 410 litre round chamber sliding door autoclave, is to be used for sterilising loads comprising of liquids/media contained in 4 litre bioreactor flasks. To optimise cycle times this unit is fitted with Load Sensed Process Timing, fan cooling, autofill and autodrain – providing water management for the in-chamber heaters. A loading trolley system has been added to aid manual handling when filling and emptying the sterilisation chamber. The circular section sliding door sterilizer range offers all the features of Astell’s popular front-loading ‘Swiftlock’ machines but without using a hinged door. This typically offers improved loading access and a reduced footprint for the same chamber capacity.
