Leada Acrow Invests in New Formwork

Leada Acrow has invested almost £250,000 in new formwork equipment specially manufactured for the company. The majority of the new formwork has gone out on immediate hire to assist construction of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie to Tipperty project, a major transport infrastructure project at the heart of the Scottish Government’s commitment to improve transport in Aberdeen and across the north east of Scotland. The project involves the construction of a new 58km road which is scheduled to open in winter 2017. This latest investment comprises Slimlite Soldiers which are designed to be an economic high strength backing member for all formwork applications. Constructed from high-grade galvanised steel yet remaining lightweight, they allow ties to be fitted at any position and the construction of almost any configuration. Spliced end to end, they can be constructed to any desired length. Barry Furlong, Director of Leada Acrow said: “Slimlite Soldiers are extremely popular items and we have made this investment to support the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie to Tipperty project. Slimlite Soldiers allow the desired concrete finish to be achieved without the need for ties to be moved or for sheets to be re-sized, presenting an economical and efficient formwork solution.” Leada Acrow’s formwork knowledge and engineering expertise is unrivalled in the hire industry and the Aberdeen project offered up some technical challenges, “On this project, the longer than normal span of the Waler Beam proved to be a challenge for our engineering teams, however to overcome this the use of Super A-Beam was incorporated. Due to their superior strength and effective depth this allowed us to control deflections and meet the required specification.” The new route consists of four sections - Balmedie to Tipperty (12km from Blackdog to Tipperty), the Northern Leg (16.1km from North Kingswells to Blackdog), the Southern Leg (18.7km from Charleston to North Kingswells) and the Fastlink (11.5km from Stonehaven to Cleanhill). Once open, the new road is expected to carry more than 43,000 vehicles each day through its busiest sections. There are 75 primary structures throughout the whole project, with two of these being major crossings over the River Dee in the south and the River Don in the north. There are also several secondary structures which involve the installation of pre-cast culverts, manholes and other waterway structures.
