From Tiny Original to 1000% Scale: 3D Printing Brings Intricate Form to Life

A recent Artscan3D project shows just how dramatically a small object can be transformed through 3D scanning, digital scaling and 3D printing.

The original form was reproduced at 1000% of its original size, creating a striking sculptural piece that retains the fine surface detail of the source while presenting it on a completely different scale.

Once printed, the enlarged piece was given a bronze-effect finish and temporarily mounted on a Richlite base, creating a finished display object from what began as a much smaller original.

Scaling Objects Without Losing Detail

One of the key advantages of 3D scanning is the ability to capture the shape and surface detail of a physical object and turn it into an accurate digital model.

That digital model can then be enlarged, reduced, duplicated or adapted before being manufactured again using processes such as 3D printing or CNC machining.

Artscan3D uses high-resolution structured light scanning to capture artwork, sculptures, objects and engineered components, with scanned models prepared for uses including reproduction, preservation, reverse engineering and physical manufacture.

From Digital Model to Physical Sculpture

For projects such as this, the scanned model can be scaled digitally before being reproduced as a much larger physical object.

Artscan3D offers 3D printing in resin and ceramics, allowing scanned or supplied digital models to be turned into tangible pieces for display, reference, prototyping or further finishing.

The company also provides bespoke finishing, meaning the printed piece can be developed beyond the raw print stage to achieve a more decorative or sculptural appearance.

In this case, the bronze-style finish helps emphasise the intricate surface pattern of the enlarged form, while the temporary Richlite base provides a simple support until a more permanent mounting solution is chosen.

3D Scanning and Reproduction for Art and Sculpture

Artscan3D works with artists, sculptors, museums, heritage organisations and commercial customers across the UK, providing services ranging from scanning and digital modelling through to scaled reproduction and finished manufacture.

Projects can begin with an existing physical object, a sculpture or even a supplied 3D file, with the final output tailored to the scale, material and purpose required.

The ability to move from physical object to digital model and back again at a completely different scale opens up a wide range of possibilities for artists, designers and anyone looking to reproduce or reinterpret an existing form.
