AirProtekt helps car seat maker meet local authority emission control targets
Automotive interiors specialist, Johnson Controls of Wednesbury, West Midlands has turned to AirProtekt, the UK’s air pollution control specialists, to help meet the challenge of tight air quality emission controls imposed by its local authority. Johnson Controls’ Wednesbury facility produces car seats for major automotive vehicle manufacturers such as BMW, Mini and Range Rover. Polyurethane foam is a vital ingredient of the car seat construction. Naphtha, created as a waste product during the processing of the polyurethane foam at the plant, is a potentially noxious chemical that has to be stopped from being emitted to the local environment. To remove the naphtha and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) AirProtekt supplied a Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO) system manufactured by Lufttechnik Bayreuth (LTB) of Germany. The decision to select AirProtekt was made simpler for Johnson’s management team because another of Johnson Controls European manufacturing sites had previously installed a RTO system from LTB to handle its air pollution quality requirements. The success of that system pointed the way forward because AirProtekt has worked as the sole distributor of Regenerative Thermal Oxidisers for LTB in the UK for many years. AirProtekt‘s thorough understanding of the LTB systems enabled the Cambridge-based air pollution control specialist to not only provide in-depth technical advice and support for the project but also implement the installation and commissioning of the new emission control systems at the West Midlands plant. Trevor Lawton, AirProtekt’s managing director, said: “Johnson Controls desired a reliable ‘total package’ solution for the project. AirProtekt met the requirement by offering a service that embraced the complete engineering cycle from conceptual design, equipment supply, and installation through to commissioning. We even partnered with another company to provide essential inlet ducting systems for the project. To complete the picture we also fully supported Johnson Controls with an experienced after sales service team.” “Our experience of working with LTB’s popular RTO systems is also second to none. LTB has installed more than 200 RTO systems across Europe so there is no doubt we are dealing with a well proven technology solution,” continued Lawton.
