NRMM Diesel Particulate Filters
Agriemach have recently supplied a number of “Direct Muffler Replacement” Diesel Particulate Filters for retro-fit on a selection of Komatsu PC138US-8 Excavators, which will now bring these machines up to NRMM compliance for operating within Central London. Agriemach Diesel Particulate Filters are certified by the Energy Saving Trust and listed on their approved product register, along with Agriemach being an approved supplier and installer. These particular filters from the Agriemach DPF range are passive regenerating, which means as the carbon deposits (soot) are collected, it is burnt off utilising the exhaust gas temperature, along with benefiting from an Oxidation Catalyst in front of the filter for converting CO and HC emissions. The filters are high efficiency and come complete with data loggers and “in cab” monitor display, to ensure that the operator is aware of filter operation at all times. Agriemach offer either fully engineered muffler replacements or standard off-the-shelf designs for NRMM engines up to any size, and stationary engines up to 5MW. The filters offer a 99% efficiency for PM (particle count), 85% PM (gravimetric), 90% CO and 80% for Hyrdrocarbons. Since 2008, heavy duty diesel road vehicles have had to meet emissions standards for PM to avoid being charged for travelling within the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ).The Mayor has recently announced his intention to introduce an ultra low emission zone in central London from 2020. This will require all vehicles to be either zero or ultra low emission. It is also important to take action to reduce emissions from non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) to protect and improve the health of London residents. The latest version of the London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory estimates that in 2010 the NRMM used on construction sites was responsible for 12% of NOx emissions and 15% of PM10 emissions in Greater London. 2015 EMISSION STANDARDS From 1 September 2015 NRMM of net power between 37kW and 560kW used in London will be required to meet the standards set out below. This will apply to both variable and constant speed engines for both NOx and PM. These standards will be based upon engine emissions standards set in EU Directive 97/68/EC and its subsequent amendments. NRMM used on the site of any major development within Greater London will be required to meet Stage IIIA of the Directive as a minimum; and NRMM used on any site within the Central Activity Zone or Canary Wharf will be required to meet Stage IIIB of the Directive as a minimum. From 1 September 2020 the following will apply: NRMM used on any site within Greater London will be required to meet Stage IIIB of the Directive as a minimum. NRMM used on any site within the Central Activity Zone or Canary Wharf will be required to meet Stage IV of the Directive as a minimum. These requirements may be met using the following techniques; •Reorganisation of NRMM fleet •Replacing equipment (with new or second hand equipment which meets the policy) •Retrofit abatement technologies •Re-engining All eligible NRMM should meet the standards above unless it can be demonstrated that the machinery is not available or that a comprehensive retrofit to meet both PM and NOx emission standards is not feasible. In this situation every effort should be made to use the least polluting equipment available including retrofitting technologies to reduce particulate matter emissions. These NRMM emissions standards will apply to all construction projects which are active from September 2015 including those which commenced before this date. An inventory of all NRMM should be kept on-site stating the emission limits for all equipment.
