TOP TIPS FOR USING GAS SAFELY WHILST CAMPING

Summer is quickly approaching, and we are all eager to enjoy the warmer weather and longer days. Camping trips are at their peak this time of year, with many people stepping back into nature. However, camping also requires preparation and attention to safety. One important aspect to consider whilst camping is the safe use of gas for cooking and heating.

Camping gas is an essential item to take on your camping trip, providing a gas supply for everything from lanterns to stoves. When handling gas, however, there are safety tips which you cannot ignore. At Adams Gas, we have listed the most important gas safety tips to keep in mind on your next camping trip.

1.     Read the Instructions

Using a gas BBQ on your camping trip can be a fun and enjoyable experience for all the family, but it is vital to remember that safety always comes first. All cooking equipment should come with a set of instructions on safe usage. These instructions should include information on how to light the stove, adjust the flame, and turn it off safely.

You must be prepared if an accident happens, such as the BBQ gas canister falling over or the stove flame catching a flammable item. Prevention is the name of the game here; ensure that you have a first aid kit or a fire extinguisher stored nearby.

2.     Check for Leaks

Several types of gases are used while people go camping, such as butane gas or propane gas. You need to check which type of fuel your cooking equipment requires. Here are some extra tips to help you find the correct fuel:

  • Always check the fuel-to-boil speed. It will tell you how efficiently the cooker will use the fuel you buy and save you money overall.
  • It is essential to know the size of the cooker or camping BBQ. A small cooker will work just as efficiently as a larger one.

Before using any gas or any of the related equipment, you must check for any leaks. No matter how small. It can prevent an emergency from happening on your camping trip. A quick and effortless way to check, apply a mixture of soap and water to the connections and turn on the gas. If you see any bubbles, even small ones, this indicates that there was a leak. If you discover your bottled gas is leaking, turn the gas off immediately and have a professional inspect and repair the bottle or BBQ.

3.     Keep Children and Pets Away

Camping BBQs and all other gas products can cause harm to those who are unaware of how to use them correctly and safely. These products must be kept away from infants and children to prevent harm. Do not let them touch or poke the BBQ or throw any food or stones into it.

It would be great for you to teach your children how to use the BBQ securely. Allowing them to help you cook, with supervision, can build a better sense of trust. You can start by giving them a talk about the potential dangers of using camping gas bottles.

Keep the product safely stored away when you are not using it. Whilst in use, ensure that both children and pets are kept at a safe distance.

4.     Use Proper Ventilation

Gas appliances should always be used in a well-ventilated area to prevent the build-up of carbon monoxide.

If you are in a well-ventilated area, you must not leave any gas equipment unattended. Including heaters, lanterns, and stoves. If you must leave for any period, make sure that you turn off the gas and give the equipment time to cool down before you move away.

5.     Store the Gas Safely

Gas should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area when not in use. The BBQ gas bottles need to be stored in an upright position and away from any heat sources.

A camping BBQ should always be set up in a designated place or on a level patch of ground. It is recommended that any flammable materials should always be at least 3 meters away from the BBQ.

6.     Enjoy Your Time and Keep It Simple

Camping should be a fun experience. But you must leave the site as you found it, with minimal damage to the surrounding area. You should take all the food, equipment, and rubbish from the site.
